Communication in NursingRedesigning the learning environment to solve a performance problem surrounding communication, while teaching that communication is a learned skill developed with practice and feedback
Innovative Experiential Learning
Designed for first-semester nursing students, the Fairmont Communication Challenge transforms the campus into an experiential learning environment. Students practice professional introductions through real-world interactions with unfamiliar faculty and staff, then reflect on their confidence, communication, and how the experience transfers to future patient encounters.
The Fairmont Communication Challenge
This is where the learning leaves the classroom.
First-semester nursing students have 15–20 minutes to navigate the university campus and practice professional communication with faculty and staff. The stated purpose is to develop professional introductions, confidence, and communication skills.
Students must:
Approach faculty or staff members.
Initiate the interaction themselves.
Introduce themselves professionally.
Identify themselves as nursing students.
Explain the purpose of the interaction.
Collect signatures and/or business cards.
Repeat the interaction with multiple unfamiliar people.
