Enhancing Clinical Skill & Competency Through Technology.
Project Overview
The Challenge
Nursing students must move beyond understanding how a clinical procedure is performed to demonstrating that skill safely and competently in patient care. This project addressed the need for greater opportunities to observe, practice, receive feedback, self-evaluate, and repeat clinical skills within the nursing skills laboratory.
Post-Installation
Below are two areas of focus for this project
Mock Up & Post-Installation
-
Audience: Prelicensure nursing students
My Role: Project Co-Designer & Nursing Subject Matter Expert
Setting: Nursing Skills Laboratory
Learning Need: Clinical skill competency and learner confidence
Solution: Technology-supported clinical skills learning
Learning Model: Learn • See • Practice • Prove • Do • Maintain
Methods: Demonstration • Simulation • Deliberate practice • Feedback • Self-evaluation
Evaluation: Competency performance and learner-confidence measures -
The solution integrated SMART displays at patient-care stations within the nursing skills laboratory, allowing clinical demonstrations and instructional videos to be available where learners practiced.
Rather than using technology simply to deliver content, the design supported a progression from knowledge acquisition and observation to deliberate practice, competency demonstration, supervised performance, reflection, and continued skill development.
-
The project required collaboration beyond nursing faculty. Technology requirements, cost considerations, installation, infrastructure, and implementation involved coordination with campus Information Technology, Physical Plant, and other institutional stakeholders.
-
To strengthen clinical competency and confidence while providing learners with additional opportunities for observation, practice, feedback, reflection, and self-evaluation. The broader goal was to support safer clinical performance and patient care.
